How Many Brake Shoes Does A Car Have

date 2022-06-21

The car can only drive on the road because of the rotation of the wheels. What should we do when the car is about to stop? It is impossible for the driver to put his foot on the ground to stop the car from moving forward as in the cartoon. At this time, he has to rely on the brake device on the car to slow down and stop the car. In particular, the brake shoe plays an important role in the brake system. So what's the difference between the brake shoes? How many brake shoes does a car have?

What's The Difference Between The Brake Shoes

The brake device generates friction between the brake pad and the wheel drum or disc, and converts the kinetic energy of the car into heat energy for consumption in the process of friction. Common brake devices include "drum brake" and "disc brake". Their basic features are as follows:

1、 Drum brake shoe

Two semicircular brake pads are installed in the wheel hub, and the "lever principle" is used to push the brake pads to make the brake pads contact with the inner surface of the wheel drum and cause friction.

Working Principle

Drum brake has been used in automobiles for nearly a century. However, due to its reliability and strong braking force, drum brake is still configured on many models (mostly used in the rear wheels). Drum brake is to use hydraulic pressure to push out the brake pads installed in the brake drum, so that the brake pads rub with the inner surface of the brake drum rotating with the wheel, resulting in the braking effect.

The inner surface of the brake drum of the drum brake is the position where the brake device generates braking torque. Under the same braking torque, the diameter of the brake drum of the drum brake device can be much smaller than that of the disc brake. Therefore, in order to obtain strong braking force for heavy-duty vehicles, drum brakes can only be installed in the limited space of the wheel rim.

Simply put, drum brake is a brake device that uses the static brake pads in the brake drum to rub the brake drum rotating with the wheel to generate friction and reduce the rotation speed of the wheel.

2、 Disc Brake Shoe

Use the brake caliper to control the two brake pads to clamp the brake shoes disc on the wheel. When the brake pads clamp the disc, friction will occur between them.

When the vehicle is driving on a wet or icy road with low friction, if excessive braking occurs, the wheels will be locked by the braking device and lose grip, resulting in the vehicle losing the ability to control the direction. In order to enable the vehicle to effectively control the forward direction on this dangerous road, ABS "anti lock braking system" was developed.

Disc Brake Shoe

ABS "anti lock braking system" with increasingly strong performance can also let TCS (traction control system) "tracking control system" and VSC (vehicle stability control) "vehicle stability control system" (equivalent to ESP) control the tracking performance of the vehicle when driving and the stability performance of the vehicle when cornering.

Working Principle

Disc brake is a braking device that uses a stationary brake disc to clamp the brake disc rotating with the tire to generate friction, so that the wheel rotation speed will be low. When the brake pedal is depressed, the piston in the brake master cylinder will be pushed to build pressure in the brake oil circuit. The pressure is transmitted to the piston of the brake cylinder on the brake caliper through the brake oil. After being pressurized, the piston of the brake cylinder will move outward and push the brake pad to clamp the brake disc, causing friction between the brake pad and the brake disc to reduce the wheel speed, so as to slow down or stop the car.

How Many Brake Shoes Does A Car Have

For a car with four wheels, the foot brake is used to brake the front and rear four wheels, the hand brake is used to brake the two rear wheels, and 8 brake pads are replaced for a car. Whether to replace the brake pad depends on the number of times you use the brake and the emergency braking. You can observe the thickness of the brake pad to decide whether to replace it.

You can ask a friend who uses the same kind of car. Generally, you can check it. For disc brakes, the thickness of the brake pads is usually no less than 2mm. Generally, the disc brakes are 40000-60000 km, while the old drum brakes can be more than 100000 km.
