Many of the parts of an “S” cam brake are located in the wheel. Characteristic of the “S” cam brake design is the exposed pushrod. This allows easy access to the brake linkage to check adjustment. The components within the wheel are difficult to see, particularly when a dust shield or backing plate is used to protect the components.

The brake shoes and drum are located within the wheel, along with the hardware to hold these parts in position.

Other internal parts may include some or all of the following:

-A brake spider that serves as the main mounting base for the brake shoes

-Single or dual anchor pins to attach one end of the brake shoes

-Anchor springs to hold the brake shoes in position at the anchor end

-The head of the "S" camshaft

-Camshaft rollers that rotate with the camshaft while moving the brake shoes inward and outward

-A return spring to pull the brake shoes in to the released position and keep the camshaft rollers engaged with the camshaft head

How Do S Cam Brakes Work


The S Cam Brakes is a part of the brake linkage for heavy duty truck air brakes. The S Cam Brakes is the component responsible for spreading the brake shoes apart. In air brake systems, the brake chamber expands and the operating rod pushes on the (brake) slack adjuster.


As the operating rod pushes on the slack adjuster, it rotates around the shaft of the S-Cam. When the S Cam Brakes is rotated the eccentric shape of the cam head pushes the brake shoes apart. The brake shoes separate and cause friction between the brake lining and the brake drum. It is this friction that slows and stops the vehicle.


How To Adjust S-Cam Air Brakes


The steps of adjust s-cam air brakes


chock the wheels,

pump the air pressure to over 100 pounds per square inch,

release the parking brakes,

get out, determine that it is in fact out-of-adjustment by using the pry bar method for the most part.


You might have to use the applied stroke method and I'll put a card up in the corner for you here on determining air brake adjustment.


Once you determine that it's out-of-adjustment you take your 9/16 wrench, push it over the adjusting nut, you'll have to release the locking sleeve and we'll show you how to that, and then turn the adjusting nut so the S-cam rotates in the same direction as the brake application.


Turn the adjusting nut so the S-cam rotates in the same direction as a brake application.

Then you turn it all the way until the nut goes tight and you shouldn't have to turn it more than one or two revolutions at the most.

Turn it until the adjusting nut goes tight, check that it is in fact tight because what you've done is manually tightened, or manually applied the brake.

Manually apply the brake, take your wrench, and back it off a third to half a turn, and then make sure that the locking sleeve is re-engaged over the adjusting nut, the 9/16 nut, put your pry bar in and make sure that it's within adjustment.



After you do that you have to adjust both manual slack adjusters on both sides of the axle so know that as well that if you do one you've got to do the one on the other side of the axle as well.
